The Rock Crashed Fox’s Pregame Show and Had Jimmy Johnson Tearing Up With Heartfelt Messages
When Jimmy Johnson was coaching the
Miami Hurricanes, Dwayne Johnson had
a fantasy of playing for him before he
became a professional wrestler, owner of
the XFL, and well-known actor.
Johnson took Miami to new heights in
the 1980s and led the Hurricanes to a
national championship in ’87. When The
Rock reached his senior year of high
school in ’89, he only wanted to play
football for Johnson. However, the Pro
Football Hall of Fame coach jumped to
the NFL ranks to become the Dallas
Cowboys’ second head coach ahead of the ‘89 campaign.
The Rock chose to play for the
Hurricanes in remembrance of Johnson
even though he was unable to play for
the renowned coach. The Rock presented
Johnson with his letter of intent to play
for him while he was at Miami and
praised the newest member of the
Cowboys Ring of Honor on the Fox NFL Sunday pregame show.
“I intended to present this to you when I
was eighteen. The Rock chuckled, “This is
my letter of intent to play for you. It
would be an honor if you ever decided to become a coach again.
Johnson was nearly in tears.
The Rock spent four years at Miami as a
defensive lineman from 1991 to ’94 and
was part of Miami’s championship team in ’91.
After 30 years and the ending of deep-
rooted friction with Dallas owner Jerry
Jones, Johnson earned his rightful place
in the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor during
halftime of the team’s 20–19 victory on Saturday night.
