During the January transfer window, Callum Styles, an international Hungarian, completed a loan deal with

Sunderland from Barnsley.

Since then, the 24-year-old has made 11 first-team appearances for the Black Cats, showcasing his versatility by

starting games at left-back and on either wing for Mike Dodds’ club thus far.

Despite playing 22 times for the Lions during a season marred by injury while on loan at Millwall the previous

summer, he chose not to make the transfer permanent.

He instead remained at Barnsley in League One, and made 21 appearances for his parent club in the first half of this

season, scoring three goals.

Styles has not nailed down a starting berth at the Stadium of Light, and it seems unlikely that he will stay on

at Sunderland despite the club holding an option to buy him in the summer.

Throughout his time at Barnsley, Styles was frequently employed as a wing-back or midfielder. However, his stature

increased in 2020–21 when, under Valerien Ismael’s leadership, the Tykes finished fifth in the Championship.

At Oakwell, the twenty-year-old emerged as a crucial player, contributing five goals and four assists across all

competitions and winning the club’s Young Player of the Season award.

Styles signed a loan deal with Millwall following his team’s 2022–2023 relegation; however, a muscular injury ended

his season early, limiting him to just 22 games for the Lions.

During his tenure at Barnsley, Styles was often used as a midfielder or wing-back. But in 2020–21, with Valerien

Ismael leading the Tykes to a fifth-place finish in the Championship, his stature grew.

The twenty-year-old became an important member of the Oakwell team, winning the club’s Young Player of the

Season award and adding five goals and four assists in all competitions.

After his team was relegated to the lower leagues in 2022–2023, Styles signed a loan agreement with Millwall.

However, he only played 22 games for the Lions due to a muscular ailment that ended his season early.

He has performed poorly in certain games, such as the 5-1 home loss to Blackburn Rovers, where he was forced to

play a position he had never played as a left-back before—just five times in his career.

In an interview with the Sunderland Echo, Styles said that he had not had any conversations on his future. I’m

simply thinking about football; the rest of us can talk about it.
