Ex-Rangers midfielder admits he is hoping for Ibrox return; discusses financial implications

Since taking over the Diamonds in May 2022, the 31-year-old Ibrox Academy alumnus has taken his biggest scalp to date,

defeating Craig Levein in the cup.

Nikolay Todorov scored the only goal of the game as Championship Airdrie defeated their

Scottish Premiership counterparts in a well-earned victory.

And now Rhys McCabe insists Rangers or Celtic are in the club’s Scottish Cup sights with the powers that

be at the Excelsior Stadium praying for an Old Firm payday.

Speaking after the victory, the talented young manager was asked if he fancied a return to Ibrox and it was a very clear personal yes.

But the allure of a payday similar to that of Celtic’s fourth round opponents Buckie Thistle is also not lost on the ex-Sheffield Wednesday star.

“Of course (I’d love a return to Rangers), and there’s a part of me, being a Rangers supporter, that I’d love Celtic as well,” said McCabe.

“We could get Bonnyrigg away and it is one of those kinds of draws, so I’m not too fussed.

“It is one of these ones where we will be delighted whoever we get.

“I know from a club point of view, the owner will be praying for a big one away from home, from the financial side

of it and a day out for the supporters.”

Rhys McCabe has also been speaking about the approach of his Airdrie side, who are currently 4th in the Scottish Championship and who were

defeated in the Premiership playoffs last season.

The second division side’s attacking approach has already overcome Premiership opposition and McCabe insists he won’t be changing it no matter

who Airdrie draw.

“It doesn’t matter who we play, we will approach the game with the same mentality,” said McCabe. “We will implement the same ideas and try to

win the game.

“It doesn’t matter if it was Rangers, Celtic or Real Madrid – I play to win and, on that performance today, it will give the boys a confidence boost.

“If we can get someone [winnable] then you never know, we might get a wee cup run.”

Rhys McCabe came through the Academy at Rangers and played nine games for the club before the Gers’ financial implosion saw the midfielder

move to Sheffield Wednesday.

After stints around the Scottish lower leagues and Irish football, Rhys McCabe signed for Airdrie as a player in 2021 and was appointed

player/manager a year later.
