‘Never heard that said before’: Journalist stunned after what Chris Sutton has just said about Brendan Rodgers

Following Chris Sutton’s assertion this afternoon regarding Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers,

journalist Ian Ladyman was taken aback.

Sutton criticised Rodgers and said the Hoops coach was merely going through the motions at Celtic,

given how poorly Celtic is currently doing and their inability to find any sort of winning form.

“There has been a marked change with the new manager,

Phillippe Clement has come in and got his head down,” Sutton stated [It’s All Kicking Off].

He actually is similar to the Belgian Ange Postecoglou in that he is solely concerned with what his team is doing and not with Celtic;

instead, he is thinking about the upcoming game. He’s got a lot going on.

“They won their Europa League group after an outstanding performance against Real Betis in Europe.

I don’t think Phillipe Clement believes that the Rangers are a great football team,

and I don’t think they’re out of the woods either.

“They will be extremely heartened to see that the Celtics, at this very moment,

are a disorganised group of players merely going through the motions across the city.”

“I believe it’s reasonable to argue that Brendan Rodgers hasn’t been giving it his all this season.

I also believe that the remarks he made regarding players’

lack of enthusiasm and emotion following the Hearts game.

Is it not his duty as manager to do that?

“To field a team that is driven. I believe it to be so,

and I also believe he needs to accept considerably more responsibility and a

larger portion of the blame than he has.

The squad on the pitch this season hasn’t performed as well as they should have,

despite the fact that there is a lot of dirt flying around at the board and that certain

Celtic supporters aren’t permitted inside the stadium.

People can use these things as justifications.

The idea that Rodgers was just nodding along startled co-pundit and journalist Ian Ladyman,

who stated he had never heard that about the Celtic manager before.

“I have never heard anything before about Brendan Rodgers in my life,” Ladyman retorted,

“to imply that Brendan Rodgers might be going through the motions.”

“I think we will leave it there because that perfectly captures where

Celtic are right now and I did not expect to

hear you say things like that about Brendan Rodgers by the time

we got to Christmas.” “Celtic look flat,

running out of excuses.”

This is the actual situation. Celtic isn’t passionate or driven.

The Hearts’ loss at Parkhead made that very evident.

But the red flags were up there already.

Rodgers’ team appeared to be lacking inspiration in the draw

with Motherwell as they found it difficult to penetrate a resolute defence.

They tamely gave up a 1-0 lead in the 2-1 loss to Kilmarnock because they were unable to counter an attack that,

to be honest, never should have given Celtic the difficulties that it did.

The cherry on top was the Hearts’ loss,

and Sutton’s outburst appears to have been triggered by that performance.

The Celtic manager alone can respond to the question of whether Rodgers is just going through the motions,

but you have to concur with Sutton that this team isn’t playing at its best right now and that

Rodgers needs to put in more effort to get more from them than he is already getting.
