And it was certainly needed after the Toffees were dealt a huge blow, having been deducted 10 points for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Since that punishment, they have Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Chelsea, having also lost to Manchester United.

But given that they kept clean sheets in those three triumphs, Dyche will be more focused on the victory than the defeat.

The youthful defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who is 21 years old, and the more seasoned James Tarkowski had a really solid relationship that was essential to those defensive shutouts.

However, concerningly for Everton, it appears that Branthwaite is drawing attention from other teams. FootballTransfers (December 11) reports that Tottenham has set their sights on the Toffees star ahead of the January transfer window.

Considering that the center defender recently inked a new four-year contract, the Goodison Park supporters might be optimistic about retaining hold of him [official Everton website, October 6].

Nonetheless, considering the most recent remarks made by Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, they might just be afraid of the worst.

The North London club wants to sign a new center-back in January, as reported by Fabrizio Romano on December 14. Postecoglou stated, “We need to sign another center-back though because at the moment we’re on tenterhooks in case something else happens there.”

The Tottenham manager has been forced to play the likes of full-backs Ben Davies and Emerson Royal in central defence lately given the club’s current injury crisis, but it seems that he is not keen to adopt that approach for much longer.
