Everton captain Megan Finnigan is confident the best is yet to come from the Blues this season.

With Brian Sorensen’s side back in action this weekend following a winter break, Finnigan believes 2024 can be

a successful year for the Toffees following a bumpy start to the campaign.

The Toffees opened their term with narrow defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Leicester City, but currently

sit just one point behind their tally at the same stage last year and Finnigan is confident the squad is now in a

better place as the game schedule resumes.

She told evertonfc.com, “When I look back, 2023 was a very up and down year for us.” We’ve come a long way as

a team, and that October 1-0 away victory at Anfield is, in my opinion, our best performance to date.

“We proved our strength in that match, and it was significant because we won for the first time this year as well.

It serves as a model for the caliber of performance that we hold ourselves to, and we are aware of how crucial it is

to duplicate such performances.

“People were writing us off for this year at the start of the season, but why? Why should we acknowledge that?

Everyone in the company is aware of our high caliber of talent.

The men’s team operates with the same mindset—Everton against everyone else. For my part, I adore that.

“I adore that way of thinking and that emotion. When we score with about 20 minutes remaining in the [Aston]

Villa and West Ham games, they start throwing everything at us. We take on that pressure, handle it, and I was

really convinced that we would win both games.

“I firmly believe that the girls have embraced that way of thinking and being.

“Football is a highly inconsistent sport, and I believe that some people see us and assume that Everton is having

a rough season. In actuality, our point totals at this point last year were essentially the same.

“In my opinion, we underperformed in the second part of the previous season. Hopefully, we can improve in 2024 and make significant progress.”

The first match Brian Sorensen’s team has scheduled for 2024 is a Women’s FA Cup match against Aston Villa at the Bescot Stadium on Saturday (12.30pm GMT).

When taking on the Villans, the team can benefit from their recent success, as they defeated the hosts 2-1 at Villa

Park in late November.

Finnigan, who has been with the Club for the longest time and is presently leading goal scorer this season with

three goals, emphasized the value of sharing accountability for goals scored by the team as well as her close bond

with them.

“I’ve been asked before if I’ve been working on my finishing and as much as I would like to say I have, the answer is no,” the captain said.
