Alan Shearer has retaliated against the choices made by Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville

by including two Aston Villa players in his Premier League squad of the season thus far.

To the surprise of club supporters, neither of the Sky Sports duo selected any

Villans for their starting lineups. After 20 games,

Unai Emery’s team is presently ranked second in the standings, having won 13 and lost just 4.

Shearer has chosen the boss as his manager of the season thus far,

a show of gratitude for the work he has put in.

In a letter explaining his decision to sign Emery,

he wrote: “What a season Villa are having.

“Emery’s team is so strong at home,

defeating Manchester City and Arsenal to put themselves in the title race.

He built on a great finish to last season.”

This season, two players in particular have been crucial to Villa’s success;

both could be the target of summer transfer bids. Ollie Watkins,

who has scored 14 goals in 28 games—one every other game—has been playing well.

Shearer claims that he has “led the Villa attack with excellent link-up play and a sharp eye for goal,

” but Douglas Luiz has grown to be equally important to the group.

“A brilliant midfielder who has been pivotal to Aston Villa’s success this season,

with his goals at home particularly invaluable,”

Shearer continued when discussing the Brazilian.

Fans of Villa took issue with Neville and Carragher for not having

the same positive opinions of the Villa players as Shearer had.

Carragher acknowledged that he was on the verge of adding Watkins and Luiz when

he resorted to social media last week to defend his exclusions.

“The team of the season is a bit of fun, so relax,” he went on.

Not necessarily the players we believe to be the best,

but rather those who have succeeded thus far under various conditions.

I can appreciate the frustration of Villa supporters,

but which player did you feel was most overlooked?

“I was just selecting one of Luiz, Rodri, or Declan Rice for the defensive midfield position.

I chose Rice because there were a few important late victories.

and spending a huge sum of money to join a new team and acting as though he had been there for a long time.”
