Rangers make contact with FC Twente over Gjis Smal as new January transfer update emerges
According to Voetbal International, Rangers have spoken with FC Twente about a possible January transfer to bring Gijs Smal to Ibrox this month.
The Dutch publication revealed on Tuesday, January 23, that the 26-year-old left-back, whose deal with the Eredivisie team expires at
the end of the current campaign, is a target for the Light Blues.
Smal is debating extending his stay with Twente but has shown little intention of signing a long-term contract with the Dutch club and
appears to be looking to move away from the club sooner rather than later amid interest from the Gers.
With only Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz available to the Belgian, Rangers and Philippe Clement are already lacking options at left-
back. It appears as though one or both of the defenders may be getting close to leaving Ibrox.
While there has been no indication that Barisic would agree to fresh terms before his contract expires at the end of the season, Yilmaz
has attracted a lot of interest during the January transfer window and appears ready to leave Glasgow.
Smal has been a good servant for FC Twente and impressed going forward for the Eredivisie side last season, picking up two goals and
ten assists from left back in 44 matches. He hasn’t been as good this season as he has contended with injury and fitness issues.
However, Rangers are in dire need of new options in that position, so if the Light Blues can get him well in Glasgow, he could be a very
useful option for the rest of the season. This seems like a deal to keep an eye on in the remaining days of the window.
