BBC journalist Tom English slams Rangers and Celtic after Scottish Cup games

Tom English has slammed Rangers and Celtic for not using young homegrown Scottish players despite playing

lower league sides in the Scottish Cup.

Gers took on Dumbarton on Saturday while the Hoops played Buckie Thistle and both sides did not face too many struggles in order to secure their

pathway into the next round.

English saw these clashes as a chance for Philippe Clement and Brendan Rodgers to give some of the younger players a go, which they did not.

He wrote on Twitter: “No young homegrown players starting for Celtic at home to Buckie Thistle. Celtic/Rangers are in a fantastic position to do it.”

Their decision

English’s criticism of Rangers and Celtic for not fielding young homegrown Scottish players in Scottish Cup matches lacks merit for several

reasons.

As a sports commentator, he should acknowledge the complexities of managerial decisions and respect the autonomy of coaches to make tactical choices based on various factors.

Managers like Clement and Rodgers might have opted for experienced lineups against lower-league sides due to the importance of progressing in the tournament.

Cup competitions are often unpredictable and selecting seasoned players can ensure stability and a higher likelihood of victory.

Furthermore, the matches followed a winter break, making it crucial for players to regain match fitness through competitive games.

Managers may have prioritised using established players to ensure a smoother transition back to regular league fixtures.
