Insider: West Ham plot Flynn Downes U-turn

Flynn Downes, a 25-year-old midfielder, is expected to get one more chance to make an impression

in preseason under Julen Lopetegui, but West Ham is currently planning to bolster their midfield in

the off-season as part of their transfer window plan. Nevertheless, sources

close to the team have told Football Insider that the club may make a last-minute decision regarding Downes’ future.

Therefore, it’s thought that later in the summer, the Londoners may become more receptive

to Downes’ permanent departure.

He joined Southampton on loan this season, following James Ward-Prowse’s departure to the London Stadium,

and made an immediate impression.

West Ham plan midfield reinforcements – Downes could go

The Saints “would love” to sign the star midfielder on a full-time basis this summer, according to source

Lopetegui, who took over for David Moyes after the latter deemed Downes surplus to requirements,

will evaluate his entire roster in preseason. Downes, a former Swansea player who played for Southampton boss Russell Martin in Wales, made 37 appearances for Southampton this season, starting in 35 of those games.

His contract at West Ham runs until June 2027. Downes, who was reportedly paid £12 million for the

Irons two years ago, struggled to get game time in the 2022–23 season before

emerging as a crucial member of Southampton’s promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.
