Celtic have wasted £2.8m on a signing who played less than Lagerbielke

Although the board supported Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers during the summer transfer window

of the previous year, not many of his acquisitions have proven to be very successful thus far.

Just three of the 10 players the Northern Irish head coach brought in for loan or permanent

deals last year—Paulo Bernardo, Hyun-jun Yang, and Luis Palma—hit double figures for starts in the Scottish Premiership.

The club may look back on their business during that time with regret as they may have wasted

millions on ineffective recruits, as many of the additions made during that window have yet to

establish a permanent place in Parkhead’s starting lineup.With just four league starts under his belt,

Gustaf Lagerbielke is one player who has really suffered in Scotland. However, the Hoops have also

had a nightmare with Danish midfielder Odin Thiago Holm.

Last summer, The Daily Record revealed that the Scottish powerhouses had reached an

agreement to sign the youthful talent from Valerenga on a permanent basis for a fee of £2.6 million.

According to Salary Sport, Holm apparently makes £4.8k per week with the Bhoys, which

puts his season salary just short of £250k.

This indicates that Celtic have already paid more than £2.8 million for the 21-year-old failure,

including salary and the transfer price, and they have not received much in return.

The table above shows that Holm’s minutes on the field did not justify that expenditure; in fact,

only two outfield players—both academy graduates—played fewer minutes than him,

and Lagerbielke even accrued more Premiership minutes.

The manager may have decided to utilize the center midfielder sparingly for the balance of the season

because he only appeared in two Champions League group stage games and was sent off against

Feyenoord as a replacement.

All in all, Holm’s signing has been a disaster for Celtic because of his lack of playing time

both at home and in Europe, wasting the £2.8 million that Celtic paid for him.

His one matchday appearance for the Hoops came off the bench against St Johnstone in March,

and there’s little indication that his luck will soon turn in Glasgow, therefore it might be best for

the team to sever connections with him, on loan or permanently, in the summer to end his Scottish nightmare.
