Even though Tottenham Hotspur lost to Aston Villa in the Premier League standings,

the Lilywites will receive £2 million more in prize money because of their popularity on television.

Tottenham and Aston Villa traded positions for fourth place throughout the Premier League season,

but Unai Emery’s team prevailed and will play in the Champions League the following year.

Instead, Ange Postecoglou’s team will get ready for Europa League play. Spurs will have a busy

transfer window as they try to enhance their roster in preparation for the next stage of the Australian’s

revolutionary ambition at the club.

Spurs will therefore be encouraged to learn that the Premier League will pay out approximately £164

million in prize money and television payments. And that’s more than Aston Villa’s bonus,

says financial guru Chris Weatherspoon.

To put it simply, Premier League clubs receive compensation for broadcasting from six different sources.

The pots for central commercial payment, domestic share, and international share,

which together make up two thirds of the total revenue, are divided equally among the 20 clubs.

The remaining funds are distributed for local TV, international TV, and a fee each game shown

according to a merit-based method. This is where Spurs win since more of their games were televised,

which resulted in a £164 million payment as opposed to £161.8 million for Villa.

But it’s estimated that Villa will receive almost £64 million for qualifying for the Champions

League the following year.

In the big picture, the extra £2.2 million doesn’t really matter, especially considering what

Villa will still gain in terms of Champions League play. Nevertheless, given our club’s current

financial situation, prize money shouldn’t actually have any bearing on how we conduct ourselves in the transfer market.
