JUST IN: Everton set to sell three key players to offset dept
Amadou Onana, a 20-year-old international player for Belgium, was signed by Everton over West Ham.
He will play for the Toffees for five years. “I know it’s a big, big club, one of the biggest in England,” said Onana.
After beating West Ham to the 20-year-old Belgium international’s signature, Onana becomes Everton’s fifth summer addition.
Onana’s personal terms proved to be a problem for West Ham, despite the fact that the two teams had agreed on a £33.5 million fee.
This allowed Everton to quickly agree on a fee and schedule a medical.
Onana said to evertontv, “I know it’s a big, big club, one of the biggest in England.” “I want to be involved in it for a very long time.
“Everyone here has demonstrated a genuine desire for me and a plan for my future, so I greatly valued our conversations
with the director of football (Kevin Thelwell) and manager, Frank Lampard. I enjoyed the way they instructed me to play.
“It fits because they both have a lot of ambition and I am that kind of man.
“One of the main causes was the manager. He was a midfielder as well as an elite player who won numerous titles.
His attention means a lot to me, and I believe he has a lot to teach me.”
At Everton, Onana will don the No. 8 shirt, but he maintains that he is capable of filling several midfield roles.
“I believe I am capable of playing every position in central midfield, including holding and box-to-box as a number eight.
Nevertheless, I’ll play wherever the manager needs me to,” Onana continued.
Lille stands to gain a lot of money from the €7 million (£5.9 million) deal they agreed with Hamburg for Onana last summer.
The Belgium international played in Ligue 1 last season, making 11 starts and 21 substitute appearances.
Lille typically sells players reluctantly, but they are aware that they might not be able to obtain a deal this
good for the player in the future.
