Trevor Bauer: Should the Yankees Sign Him?
Trevor Bauer: Should the Yankees Sign Him?
Pitchers are still needed by the New York Yankees for both the rotation and the bullpen. The Yankees have had difficult luck with
their relievers, Victor González and Caleb Ferguson, and Marcus Stroman, but otherwise, the offseason has been difficult.
They have already lost out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a
Japanese wonder, and are unlikely to sign Blake Snell
or Jordan Montgomery.
Additionally, trade target Corbin Burnes joined a division
opponent instead. Luis Severino, Frankie Montas,
Wandy Peralta, and Keynan Middleton all left in free agency
while they traded away Michael King. The Bronx Bombers
have few options left, but one talented, if disgraced,
option is available.
Having been banished from Major League Baseball,
Trevor Bauer has expressed a desperate desire to contract
with any organization. He said that he would be open to
playing on a low-cost contract with incentives during his
Tuesday appearance on the “This Past Weekend” podcast.
The Yankees have not been mentioned as a potential suitor
for Bauer in a market that is growing very slowly, if at all.
They should continue to avoid Bauer as much as possible,
even though they could use a good pitcher on a risk-free deal.
Bauer’s exile to Nippon Professional Baseball following his
record-breaking signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021
was due to a significant suspension from MLB stemming from
at least four women’s allegations of sexual assault.
Even though his punishment was subsequently lowered
to 194 games, the 324 games he was suspended for
(two full seasons) remains the longest non-permanent
suspension in MLB history, longer than the 162 games
that former Yankee Alex Rodriguez was suspended for in 2014.
