There Could Be a Bigger East Rival for the Boston Celtics After the Trade Deadline
After the NBA trade deadline, the dust has settled. The Boston Celtics, who have the best record in the NBA, were mostly silent, as was to be anticipated. To further strengthen their depth, they brought in two role players, Jaden Springer and Xavier Tillman.
The New York Knicks, meanwhile, kept adding players to their roster. The Toronto Raptors traded forward OG Anunoby to the
Knicks one month prior, and the team generated additional
trade rumors during the deadline.
The Knicks are possibly the most talented team in the Eastern Conference after acquiring Bojan Bogdanovic and
Alec Burks from the Detroit Pistons. The Milwaukee Bucks
remain Boston’s top Eastern Conference rival, according
to the bookies, but the Knicks may pose a greater challenge.
A New York Knicks vs. Boston Celtics rivalry was just reignited.
At the deadline, the Celtics took the necessary action.
Boston only needed to add Tillman and Springer to their
bench to tie up a few loose ends because they had perhaps
the finest starting five (and top six) in the NBA.
Though the Bucks were seen as Boston’s greatest challenge,
the Celtics are the obvious favorites in the Eastern Conference.
Prior to the season, Milwaukee acquired Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers in a trade; but, by included veteran guard
Jrue Holiday in the deal, Milwaukee realized the value of the
defense it had lost. On the day of the trade deadline, the Bucks attempted to make up for the defensive setback by acquiring
Patrick Beverly.
With the arrival of Burks and Bogdanovic, who will contribute significantly to the team’s scoring off the bench, the Knicks
were widely considered as the greatest winners at
the trade deadline.
The Knicks and Bucks have the same record of 33-19,
but they are going in separate paths. Despite dealing
with ailments that prevented them from fielding four
starters in Thursday’s 122-108 loss to the Dallas Mavericks,
the Knicks had a strategy in place. The Bucks are in a frenzy,
searching for their identity.
Despite finishing 33-10, Adrian Griffin, a rookie coach,
was fired by Milwaukee last month. Since then, they have
dropped to 3-6 and have not demonstrated any indications
of turning things around under new coach Doc Rivers.
Sorry to the Bucks, the scorching Cleveland Cavaliers,
and the Philadelphia 76ers without Joel Embiid, but it
seems like the Boston vs. New York rivalry might get
intense come playoff time.
