With well over 100 million viewers anticipated on February 11,
Super Bowl Sunday will offer one of the largest venues on the
planet for pro-Israel organizations to try to defend Israel’s
ongoing genocide against Gaza. Super Bowl LVII in 2023 was
the highest watched US telecast in history. Robert Kraft,
the wealthy owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots, has
donated $7 million to the Foundation to Combat
Anti-Semitism in order to “Stop Jewish Hate” during
Super Bowl Sunday.
From significant contributions to AIPAC to a lengthy history
of doing business in Israel, Kraft has strong ties to the nation.
This special edition of “Choice Words” features Edge of
Sports host Dave Zirin taking aim at the impact of
Zionism in professional sports.

Dave Zirin: From The Real News Network, welcome to
Edge of Sports. I’m Dave Zirin, and I have some harsh
things to say about Bob Kraft, the owner of the
New England Patriots and a $7 million Super Bowl in addition
advertisement that I really wish not to see.
Okay, so the New England Patriots’ 82-year-old owner,
Robert Kraft mails seven-digit cheques to the
Right-leaning lobbying group AIPAC is Israeli.
However, his relationship with Israel goes much beyond
the sporadic gift. In 1963, the multibillionaire married
his late wife, Myra, in Israel, although Kraft,
only 22 years old at the time, was older than the country.
Myra and Robert established a number of business, sporting,
and charitable connections with Israel together;
the Kraft corporate website proudly displays their history.
The Kraft Group particularly takes pride in its Touchdown
in Israel initiative, which provides NFL players with free,
well-planned trips to the Holy Land so they may return and
promote the only democracy in the Middle East. Additionally,
Kraft participates in fundraising events for the Israeli defense
forces, which are openly perpetrating war crimes in
Gaza right now.
Kraft declares he is donating $100 million of his personal
funds to the Foundation Against Antisemitism because
hate breeds violence, yet he seems to be oblivious to the
atrocities occurring in the Middle East.
Let’s be precise. It’s risky what Kraft is doing politically
and what he plans to do using the Super Bowl as a platform.
It seems that he believes that criticizing Israel is by definition antisemitic. According to Kraft, part of the issue is that
Jews like me, rabbis, and Holocaust survivors are demanding a
ceasefire and a free Palestine. Furthermore, it appears that
Kraft views criticism of Israel, the IDF, and the AIPAC goal as antisemitic.
