The son of longtime head coach Bill Belichick, who is also the team’s de facto co-defensive coordinator, is reportedly leaving town as well. Belichick announced his departure from the New England Patriots last month. Steve Belichick is “currently expected” to become the new defensive coordinator at the University of Washington.

The 36-year-old recently had an interview to be considered for the vacant head coach post on Jedd Fisch’s Washington team. The first person to report on Belichick’s anticipated exit was Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports.

Belichick has been coached by his father in New England for his whole coaching career. He began in 2012 as a defensive assistant and was elevated to the position of safeties coach in 2016. He took over as the secondary’s head coach in 2019 and was named the linebackers coach the following year. Belichick has been a position coach for the past few years, but his influence on defense has significantly increased with time.

Given that his father and the Patriots had mutually parted ways, there was some thought that he might remain with the team after Mayo was elevated to head coach; with Belichick named assistant head coach, it seemed possible. DeMarcus Covington was named New England’s next defensive coordinator.

Belichick would be the third assistant coach to depart the team this summer if he does indeed leave the Patriots. Bill O’Brien, the offensive coordinator, resigned to take a job at Ohio State, and Joe Houston, the special teams coach, joined the University of Florida.
