Rangers landed transfer blow on Celtic but Jury crowns the real winners of the January transfer window
Andy Newport: With the additions of Fabio Silva, Mohamed Diomande, and Oscar Cortes, the Ibrox team is clearly in better shape
now than it was a month ago, but the supporters of Rangers believe they could have used one more striker to put a serious dent in a
Celtic team that appears vulnerable following a disappointing window. Michael Gallon: Rangers made some decent business, but
FRASER WILSON: Rangers’ three new additions appear to outnumber Celtic’s two, meaning the Ibrox team. However, I believed
that both teams needed a goal scorer, and if Adam Idah can get out to a quick start, the Hoops will be difficult to stop. Considering the
two teams, Celtic remains ahead even though they did not play in January.
ANDY: While the Hibs have undoubtedly supported Nick Montgomery by adding seven new players, I believe that Hearts’ decision to
hold onto Lawrence Shankland may have been their best move. Bojan Miovski’s retention
by Aberdeen will also be a huge plus for whoever manages the Dons.
MICHAEL: Killie look in great shape but Dundee had a belter of a window. The likes of Owen Beck returning and Micky Mellon
coming in could have them pushing for Europe. Who knows about Hibs after a raft of new recruits.
FRASER: Hibs have certainly shook things up with seven arrivals right across the team but only time will tell how successful that has
been. Hearts have added a bit of quality as have Dundee. But in landing Kevin Van Veen Kilmarnock have produced a deadline day
blockbuster that might just clinch them Euro football.
Andy: Only under the strictest of conditions that it’s a temporary position to give Dave Cormack time to find a suitable, long-term hire.
The Pittodrie chairman can’t screw this up after making mistakes with his three previous selections. If I were him, I’d be seriously
considering Airdrie boss and player Rhys McCabe.
MICHAEL: Warnock would undoubtedly steady the ship and be a welcome addition to Scottish football.
But Aberdeen could do with some long-term stability.
FRASER I’m all for it because it’s difficult to resist having some Warnock in Scottish football, even for a little while. The wise old head
has a good chance of getting the Dons into the top four. But in the long run? Aberdeen needs a manager with track record and
enthusiasm. It would be fascinating to appoint Alex Neil.
ANDY: Scotland have got a nightmare schedule to start with. First up is Wales at the Principality Stadium, a venue they haven’t won
at since 2002, before hosting championship favourites France at Murrayfield.
I fear those fixtures could spell trouble for Gregor Townsend’s injury hit squad.
MICHAEL: Scotland can have a good campaign if we beat England at Murrayfield and end this lengthy wait for a win in Wales.
France and Ireland, on the other hand, are on an other level.
FRASER: The journey to Cardiff today will determine a lot. Achieve the first victory in Wales in 22 years, and the Scots will be well-
positioned for their home matches against England and France. If this side loses today,
it might lead to a drawn-out, painful campaign for those who have been deceptive in the past.
