Barry Ferguson has stated that he understands why Rangers fans are “disappointed” that they did not sign Lawrence Shankland, but has urged them to trust Philippe Clement’s judgment.

The Hearts centre-forward was linked with a move to Ibrox during the January window, with some speculating that a deal might be made if the Light Blues matched the asking price at Tynecastle.

Shankland was rumored to be interested in the transfer this month, and Ferguson believes he would have been an ideal solution to Rangers’ striker dilemma, even though he fully trusts Clement’s final decision.

On The Go Radio Football Show (2 February, 10:35), he stated: “Personally, I thought he would have done an excellent job at Rangers.” It’s interesting to  hear the two Celtic supporters saying the same thing about him.

“For £3 million at 28 resale value. I agree with the last caller; I don’t really buy into all of that. I believe he is good enough right now to score goals for Rangers or Celtic, therefore I understand why Rangers fans are frustrated that they did not sign him.

“But listen, the manager has made the decision and you’ve got to trust him with the job that he’s done since he came through the door.”

Rangers are right to be disappointed.

Rangers fans must trust Clement’s assessment, as Ferguson said, but it appears that the Belgian has left himself significantly short of striking options for the rest of the season.

Shankland would not have only provided a consistent source of goals at Ibrox, but he would have also represented another option to bolster a frontline that is currently reliant on the form and fitness of Cyriel Dessers with everybody else sidelined.

Hopefully, Fabio Silva will be able to hit the ground running and score the goals that will propel the Gers to the Premiership title, but his record in his short career so far will not inspire confidence.

It remains to be seen whether Rangers will come to regret their transfer decisions this month, but it appears that the entire Ibrox support is filled with a sense of what could have been.
