Chris Sutton has offered his thoughts on the Scottish Premiership title fight,

conceding that Celtic’s disappointing window has given Rangers optimism of winning the league.

Philippe Clement’s Light Blues are now five points behind Brendan Rodgers’ side with a game in hand,

but their poor performance in the Old Firm derby in December drew widespread criticism from experts,

with some writing them off as title contenders.

Sutton, in particular, was quick to criticize Todd Cantwell’s performance at Celtic Park,

but the former Hoops striker believes Rodgers’ poor transfer window has left the door “wide open” for Rangers to take the title from under their nose.

He wrote in the Daily Record (2 February): “I really can’t imagine how they came to this position.

Make no mistake: they are gambling with the title, regardless of how you look at Rangers’ business.

“In the summer, they failed to properly prepare for the Champions League and suffered the price.

Now they risk missing out on the Champions League because they have left the door open for their opponents.”
Rangers have hope in the Celtic chase.

Most Rangers fans have been disappointed by their club’s transfer activity this month,

with the bulk of fans hoping for a new number nine to supplement Clement’s present forward options at Ibrox for the rest of the season.

However, supporters on the blue side of Glasgow only need to look to their city neighbours to see how successful a transfer window they have had,

as Celtic and their fans have gone completely insane over their business over the previous month.

The Hoops may still be the championship favourites, but the confidence that was visible at Celtic Park in December has dissipated, and the threat of the Gers closing the gap appears to be mounting week after week.

Hopefully, Rangers will take advantage of that excellent transfer window and begin to reduce the distance on Rodgers’ team at the top of the table.

If they wish to win this title, they will have to improve their record in the remaining Old Firm clashes.
