Jose Cifuentes could now exit Rangers within hours as Ibrox transfer saga takes ‘unexpected’ twist

Jose Cifuentes, a midfielder for Ecuador who plays for Rangers, may now leave the Ibrox club in a few hours, according to Ecuagol.

Late on Thursday, February 1, the publication announced on its website that the player is almost certain to sign a contract with the Brazilian team Cruzeiro.

Ecuagol pointed out that Cifuentes’ anticipated move to Brazil is an unexpected turn of events considering all the signs pointed to him joining Turkish club Rizespor.

A disappointing spell

The midfield player is close to joining Cruzeiro on loan, so it appears that his time at Ibrox is about to end for the time being.

And his Rangers career can only be described as disappointing, even though he has made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Gers since joining them in the summer from Los Angeles FC.

Similar to Sam Lammers, another summer acquisition, Cifuentes doesn’t seem to be a long-term fixture at the Gers—yet another unsuccessful Michael Beale signing.

Since taking over in the Ibrox dugout, current manager Philippe Clement has mainly ignored the Ecuador international, giving regular playing time to players like John Lundstram, Tom Lawrence, Ryan Jack, Nico Raskin, and Dujon Sterling.

His imminent departure exposes Rangers’ persistent recruitment problems, but now that Clement has completed his first transfer window at Ibrox, supporters will be eager for those problems to swiftly go away.
