Romano was asked directly on Deadline Day if Lawrence Shankland would be joining the Rangers,

and he was unable to rule it out.

On his Kick webcast on February 1, the Italian transfer guru was questioned live at 7.02pm by a colleague about a

“Shankland to Rangers” update, with Light Blues fans waiting for news on a late striker move.

Romano hesitated and replied, “I don’t know, yet.”

The Hearts skipper has been the subject of much conjecture leading into January and throughout the window,

but despite new contract offers from the Jambos, his future remains uncertain in the final hours of the market.

Rangers consider him the “ideal” complement to the  squad behind the scenes,

but nothing concrete has emerged.

Wishful thinking?

At this late stage of the window, the prospects of such a large transaction occurring are slim,

but if there was no likelihood, Romano would have expressed doubt at the very least.

If it were to happen, it would be a major statement for Philippe Clement’s team as

they attempt to overtake Celtic in the SPFL title battle,

but it will be extremely difficult.

There have been speculations that if he was not ready to commit his future to Tynecastle

this month after a new contract was offered,

Steven Naismith’s side might be forced to sell.

However, they will undoubtedly be even less willing to let their leader go at this late stage than they would have been anyway,

when there isn’t time to bring in a replacement with whatever money they could get for him.

Rangers

Although he has 18 months left on his contract,

he is unlikely to be inexpensive for Rangers to sign at this point if the door is open as the clock approaches 11 p.m.

Money has been found to commit to a “huge” transfer for Mohamed Diomande,

but it will not be spent until the summer,

leaving it uncertain whether the Gers can put pressure on Hearts in the last hours of the window.

In other Ranger news, paperwork has been signed ahead of a Deadline Day arrival at Ibrox,

and an announcement is imminent.
