12 candidates to replace Dan Quinn as Cowboys defensive coordinator-Massive Update
As everyone knew it would eventually happen, Dan Quinn is no longer a Cowboy by government decree.
The defensive coordinator has finally accepted a head coaching interview after three straight seasons
of many ones; he will take over as the Washington Commanders’ next coach.
The Cowboys will now need to find a successor, which may or may not have been the
intention following a few unsatisfactory defensive outings in the latter part of the most recent campaign.

In light of this, the following 12 players are possible replacements for Quinn that the Cowboys might consider.
Update on Internal Candidates: Despite no concrete confirmation, rumors have it that Whitt will
accompany Quinn to Washington in his role as defensive coordinator. Therefore, we intend to keep him here.
Joe Whitt Jr. is the obvious front-runner to succeed Quinn and is already employed by the company.
As the defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach at the moment, Whitt assists Quinn
in the booth on game days and plays a significant role in the weekly game planning process.
McCarthy interviewed a few coaches, including Whitt, for the position of coordinator before selecting Quinn,
and the two had previously worked together. Whitt worked with McCarthy for 11 seasons in Green Bay,
where he culminated his tenure as the pass game coordinator. Whitt had a similar position during Quinn’s
last season as head coach of the Falcons, providing a unique opportunity to work with both coaches.
Whitt is a great fit for the continuity role and is still able to make the required adjustments.
By now, he is familiar with the plan and would be a good fit for a promotion. In the preseason,
he even called plays for Quinn, which is typically a sign that Dallas believes Whitt is the next best player.
Dallas may face a problem if Quinn decides to appoint Whitt as his own defensive coordinator.
Durde Aden
Aden Durde, the defensive line coach, may be an option because the Cowboys will likely want to
stick with the same game plan that has worked well for them under Quinn.
The British coach joined the Falcons in 2018 as a quality control coach and has only ever worked under Quinn.
Before then, Durde had worked with the NFLUK on the International Player Pathway program.
Durde moved to Dallas with Quinn, and since then, he has been successful in producing a number
of productive defensive lineman and assembling one of the league’s top pass rush units every year.
However, Durde may not be considered ready for a coordinator post given that Quinn is a recognized hands-on c
oach with the position group and was previously a defensive line coach.
Given their strong relationship, there is also a far greater chance that Durde would
follow Quinn to his new team in some way.
Al Harris
Al Harris, who has been coaching Dallas’ defensive backs ever since McCarthy arrived,
is arguably the name that has the greatest support among the supporters. McCarthy’s eight
seasons with the Packers coincided with Harris’s eight-year stay as a standout player.
Before moving to Dallas, he worked for a spell as an assistant defensive backs coach in Kansas City.
Since then, Harris’s reputation has grown somewhat as the Cowboys have witnessed
two young cornerbacks—Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland—make waves. Many see Harris as a
budding star because of his record-breaking interception totals, which have garnered both players
All Pro recognition. In fact, Trevon Diggs has publicly endorsed Harris as DC.
Outside Candidates:
Martindale, Don “Wink”
Since the highly rated coach has spent the last two years leading the Giants defense,
the Cowboys are already familiar with Martindale.
Although there is little doubting Martindale’s coaching qualifications,
there was simply a very unpleasant divorce between him and Giants head coach Brian Daboll,
which is why Martindale is even available.
Calling all the blitzes is the best way to sum up Martindale’s plan.
This is a pretty aggressive plan that functions something how Quinn’s has been operating.
Before being fired, Martindale enjoyed a fruitful tenure in Baltimore as the defense’s progress
was impeded by a season marred by injuries. After moving to New York to work with Daboll,
he inherited a quite empty defense cabinet.
Desai Sean
The Cowboys could always sign the newly disgraced coordinator from another division
competitor if they decide not to take the recently fired coordinator from one opponent.
Sean Desai was brought to Philadelphia during the previous summer, taking over for Jonathan Gannon,
who had taken a job as head coach of the Cardinals. Desai was informally demoted in favor of
Matt Patricia before even playing out the entire season.
Although Desai’s defense hadn’t been the best, many outside the team realized that a
large part of its shortcomings stemmed from some roster building errors on that side of the ball,
with youthful defensive backs and inexperienced linebackers. Under Patricia, the defense did not
become any better and in some ways went backwards.
Ron Rivera
How about a recently dismissed NFC East head coach to ignite the crowd if two recently
fired NFC East coordinators weren’t enough? Ron Rivera, who went 26-40-1 in his fourth season as
the Commanders’ head coach, just finished up. Quinn’s depressing track record is a major
factor in his current position in the country’s capital.
Nevertheless, during his illustrious career, Rivera had developed a reputation for playing outstanding defense.
Prior to taking the helm in Carolina, Rivera, a former linebacker for the storied 1985 Bears squad,
oversaw a number of outstanding defenses for the Bears and Chargers. He had a lengthy career of
accomplishment on defense that helped produce several other outstanding defensive coaches around the league.
He had some success with the Panthers, even making it to the Super Bowl.
Staley Brandon
The fact that Dan Quinn had been a head coach before made him an attractive hiring for the Cowboys
because it was simpler for Mike McCarthy to put all of his trust in him for that side of the ball. In actuality,
McCarthy has employed five defensive coordinators in his time as head coach, all except one of
whom had previously served as head coach.
For this reason, Brandon Staley is probably going to be taken into consideration.
The scheme fit dilemma still exists since Staley, like Desai, is a devoted follower of Fangio.
