West Ham United reject approach for Rangers-linked defender

Rangers reportedly want Ben Johnson and Crystal Palace have now failed with an approach to sign the West Ham United defender.

Rangers have reportedly been connected to a Premier League defender who will reportedly be very difficult to sign,

however it’s hard to foresee too much more business.

Reports earlier in the January transfer window suggested that Rangers had joined the

race to sign West Ham United defender Ben Johnson.

It was suggested that Rangers were battling Leeds United and Sheffield United for Johnson as he approaches the end of his contract.

Johnson will become a free agent at the end of the season, so Rangers may have been sensing a bargain.

As of right now, according to The Athletic, West Ham has turned down Crystal Palace’s

request to sign Johnson before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

West Ham is reportedly opposed to a sale because they intend to present Johnson with a new contract in the upcoming weeks.

West Ham would probably respond in a similar manner to Rangers, but the Gers do have an advantage over Palace.

Due to Johnson’s contract status, the Rangers are able to approach the defender and offer him a pre-contract,

allowing them to sign him for free in the summer.

Rangers may still move for Johnson after the transfer window has closed in order to secure him for the upcoming campaign, as Palace

is unable to make such an offer.

Although Johnson, a 24-year-old versatile defender who can play all four positions in the back four, would be a good fit for Philippe

Clement, he needs to concentrate on playing for the first team.

Johnson, a right defender by trade, would face James Tavernier, so a move to the Rangers

might not be exactly what he is looking for at this time.
