Update on Oscar Cortes‘ five-year contract with the Rangers: Ibrox medical to be finished
Oscar Cortes is in Glasgow and is set to complete his Rangers medical ahead of joining on a loan-to-buy deal, according to Pipe Sierra.
The Win Sports TV journalist reported on 31 January that the Colombian
will initially sign his contract up until June, with the
potential permanent move set to see him secured on a long-term deal of up to five years.
Cortes, 20, is set to become the third January arrival at Ibrox after Fabio Silva and Mohamed Diomande,
and is due to help fill the gap left behind by Abdallah Sima’s injury.
Sierra wrote: “Óscar Cortés is already in Glasgow finishing medical exams to sign his contract (until June) with Rangers. He will arrive
on loan from Lens and will have a purchase option.
“If the Scots exercise it, they will sign him a 4-5 year contract.”
Whether the young player ends up on a long-term permanent agreement at the end will be determined by how big of an impression he
can make over the months of his loan arrangement.
It might also have a significant impact on the outcome of the SPFL championship and the general
performance of Rangers’ second half of the season.
Although Sima’s injury is a serious setback, Philippe Clement seems to have decided that Cortes is the best player to support the attack in Sima’s absence.
The last few days before the deadline appear to have been devoted to late business in both directions, and supporters would
undoubtedly be much pleased if there was news of a new striker.
The much-anticipated run at Lawrence Shankland has gone extremely quiet, with Cyriel Dessers the only available number nine due to
further long-term injury issues with Danilo and Kemar Roofe.
Along with Silva from Wolves, Cortes from Ligue 1 appears to be a potential addition to Clement’s attacking options, although as
things are, the number of choices is still low.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have been forced to consider an unforeseen
last-minute departure option due to a change at Celtic.
