New York Rangers need to pull off another big early trade deadline deal

The New York Rangers’ silver lining after discovering Filip Chytil is out for the season is that they now know they need a center before the trade deadline on March 8th.

Furthermore, they have some assurance about what they can do with Chytil’s entire $4.437 million in cap space.

Some or all of the cap hit can be used to bring in a pivot to back up Mika Zibanejad and Vincent Trocheck.

This should immediately propel Calgary Flames pending UFA Elias Lindholm to the top of that list.

The 29-year-old earns $4.85 million and has 32 points (9 goals, 23 assists) in 49 games, which would be a significant boost to the third line.

On Sunday, the Blueshirts confirmed that Chytil,

experienced a relapse to his upper-body ailment, will miss the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old was whacked in the open ice by Carolina Hurricanes forward Jesper Fast on November 2nd and has not played since.

He ends the season with only six assists in ten games. Before leaving,

Chytil shared a positive message on Instagram.

“It has been the hardest 3 months of my life and has not been easy for my family,

closest people and of course for whole NY Rangers organization,” Chytil said in a statement. “But even in these difficult times,

we must remain cheerful and focus on what lies ahead! Thank you all for your lovely messages! “I’ll be back stronger than ever!”

The fact that Chytil will not be back means that the Rangers must replace his offense with another center on the third line. That being said,

the team’s needs at right wing and defense cannot be overlooked.

Last year, Chris Drury showed the hockey world how he thinks.

Almost a month before the deadline, he acquired Vladimir Tarasenko and Niko Mikkola from the St. Louis Blues.
