The most stunning news out of the NFL this week may have been Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s withdrawal from contention for one of the two remaining head coaching positions.

Rather than interview with the Washington Commanders (for a second time) or the Seattle Seahawks about their open positions,

Johnson chose to remain with the Lions and oversee Dan Campbell’s offense for a third season.

According to The Athletic, the Commanders were looking forward to joining Johnson with new general manager Adam Peters.

Getting hired for the position appeared to be unavoidable.

Lions players, coaches, and executives expected him to leave.

So, why did Johnson, 37, withdraw from the running? He feels well at home with the Lions and enjoys contributing to the team’s success.

“I love Dan Campbell, I’ve known him for a long time,” Johnson told MLive’s Kyle Meinke.

“I am confident in the path of this organization. And that was truly the most compelling reason for me to return: what we have here,

what we’re building here, is something I want to be a part of.

I’ve been a part of several losing seasons over my 11 years in the NFL.”

Johnson’s choice was stunning, given that he appeared to be guaranteed a head coaching position during this hiring cycle.

Eight teams changed coaches during or after the season.

However, the Lions’ march to the NFC Championship Game may have prevented him from engaging in more serious negotiations with franchises looking for a new coach right away.

If Johnson continues to lead one of the NFL’s greatest offenses with quarterback Jared Goff,

he is likely to be considered for multiple roles next year,

some of which may be better than what was available this season.
