‘I like him’: Expert shares one big concern with Rangers set to sign £4m ace

Tim Vickery, a South American expert, is a fan of Oscar Cortes but questions why, after just a few months of French

football, RC Lens is “giving up” on the winger who is headed to Rangers.

You can see why Vickery is “a little perturbed” by the abruptness of his departure, given that the Ligue 1 team spent

almost £4 million on the Colombian international as recently as July.

Lens seems to be trimming their losses on Oscar Cortes following just four league games and six months of play. This is

true even if in the little time he has played in France’s top division, the 20-year-old has assisted and scored a goal.

Furthermore, even though the Rangers might pull off quite the coup, Vickery won’t stop until he learns the precise

reason why the Lens magic is dissolving so quickly.

Oscar Cortes is heading to Rangers from Lens.

A player who scored four goals in the recent U20 FIFA World Cup and won the Bronze Ball award—given to the third-

best player in the competition—is described by Vickery as “one of the heroes of the under-20 side, and he did well in the

Libertadores at the start of the year.”

Although he is a winger, he can play any position along the front line. He has some pace, is adept with the ball, and has

the ability to score.

“He performed admirably at the under-20 level before traveling to France, but it doesn’t appear to have worked out.

Vickery continues, “They are giving up on him very, very early” (talkSPORT, January 31, 3pm). He hasn’t performed

very often.

“I enjoy him.” However, I would feel a little offended by Lens’s apparent early abandonment of him.

A huge win or a huge gamble?

The National reports that Cortes is now in Glasgow. He is expected to sign a first-year loan with Rangers, with the

option to extend it permanently in the summer. Cortes’ dynamic abilities off the wing for Colombian team Millonarios,

which included nine goals and nine assists in his past 19 appearances, could help make up for the loss of “long-term”

absence Abdallah Sima.

Due to an injury sustained while serving in the AFCON, the Brighton loanee will be sidelined for some time.

This month, Rangers has already signed Mohamed Diomande and Fabio Silva. Jefte, the left-back, might also make it to

Ibrox.

Lino Sousa, an Arsenal star, was on the verge of joining Premier League rivals Aston Villa, but Rangers were unable to

sign him.

This month, Rangers have been connected to a number of left backs, and it appears that Brazilian prospect Jefte has

emerged as the team’s priority target.

Borna Barisic’s contract expires in the summer, and Ridvan Yilmaz has frequently been mentioned as considering a

move from Ibrox.

Although Kai Wagner decided to remain with Philadelphia Union, rumors linking him to Twente’s star player Gijs Smal

have been downplayed. A new left back is desired.

Since Lino Sousa, a talented player from Arsenal, is not expected to join Rangers before the transfer deadline, another

name may now be ruled out.
