Journo: Seven-figure Rangers signing on verge of exiting after late twist
Rangers midfielder Jose Cifuentes is close to completing a move to Brazilian side Cruzeiro, according to Derek Clark.
Cifuentes, who only joined Ibrox from Los Angeles FC for £1.2 million last summer [Glasgow Times],
is poised to go on loan. The Ecuadorian international was also linked with a move to Rizespor,
but Cruzeiro appears to have won the race for his services.
Clark, a Rangers Review journalist, wrote on his own Twitter profile [30 January]:
“Told Cifuentes’ move to Cruzeiro should be completed soon.
Minimal impact.Given how little time Cifuentes has spent with the club,
news of his impending departure last week came as a surprise.
However, the 24-year-old has had little influence and is definitely not in Philippe Clement’s long-term plans.
The signing of Mohamed Diomande just adds to the midfield battle,
thus removing Cifuentes from the pay cost makes sense.
It could have been an unpleasant position for the Gers if a trade to Rizespor had fallen through,
but happily, another team shown interest.
Returning to South America for a brief spell could help Cifuentes regain confidence before making a longer-term choice in the summer.
Previous sources have claimed that Cruzeiro will have the option to purchase the midfielder permanently,
so we may have seen the last of him.
For whatever reason, it hasn’t worked out for Cifuentes at Ibrox,
but fans will undoubtedly wish him well if this is the end.
In other Rangers news, a player has been given permission by his management to complete a move to Ibrox.
Still under contract with Gent until 2026,
the most likely explanation is that the fee being demanded is not one that we would want to pay when we still have Cyriel Dessers and Danilo.
Maybe if Sam Lammers had left on a permanent deal but he will be returning in the summer.
In terms of profile, Cuypers is very similar to Dessers in that he isn’t the quickest but is a textbook,
all-round, number nine.
He can also be just as streaky when it comes to finding the net.
