Allowing linebacker Leighton Vander Esch to complete the two-year contract he signed this offseason would be an unexpected move on the part of the Cowboys.

Dallas has to strengthen its linebacker group and defense, which has been susceptible to the run in recent seasons. Second, Vander

Esch has had trouble maintaining his health. A neck injury kept him out of the game for five games in 2023.

In his five outings, Vander Esch recorded 30 tackles and a defensive touchdown while healthy, but Dallas can’t rely on him to stay on

the field. In light of his past neck injuries, Vander Esch might also want to think about quitting football.

Franchise owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan, “The nature of his potential injury here causes me to really think longer term and

beyond what it means for next week or beyond what it means for next month” (via ESPN’s Todd Archer).

In addition to saving $2.1 million in 2024 cap space, the release of Vander Esch would result in a $2.3 million dead-cap hit.

I think everyone can agree that when the Cowboys sent Amari Cooper to Cleveland and extended Michael Gallup, they made the wrong decision.

Cooper has averaged 55 receptions for 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns in his two seasons with the Browns.

Better than any of his Dallas stats.

Gallup has 842 yards on 73 receptions and six touchdowns in those same two years.

Although we can’t reverse the trade, we can eliminate losses. Gallup must be eliminated.

Brandin Cooks caught 54 passes for 657 yards and eight touchdowns in his rookie season in Dallas.

To keep Cooks in Dallas come next season, the Cowboys will have to move heaven and earth. He and CeeDee Lamb were 2023’s most dependable receivers.

This autumn, Jalen Tolbert will begin his third year; this is usually the year where a wide receiver either shines or fades.

In his brief rookie season, Jalen Brooks displayed glimpses of potential for the future.

Four of the six passes that were thrown to Brooks were for first downs.
