Alastair Johnston continues to be impressed by Rangers boss Philippe Clement

Alastair Johnston has become “more and more convinced” about Philippe Clement since the Belgian came through a Rangers interrogation to become manager. The 49-year-old former Genk, Club Brugge, and Monaco manager was one of several potential candidates who stepped forward when Michael Beale left the Govan club last October.

After impressing the Ibrox board and earning a contract until the summer of 2027,

Clement has revitalized the Light Blues and their fans.

The Viaplay Cup returned to Ibrox for the first time since 2011 with a 1-0 win over Aberdeen in the Hampden Park final in December,

a Europa League place was secured, and the Gers continue to chase Premiership leaders Celtic,

who are currently five points behind with a game in hand.

Rangers non-executive director and former Gers chairman Johnston, 75,

who lives in the United States, told the PA news agency that Clement faced some serious scrutiny before taking over,

but the appointment is looking more promising. He stated:

“The procedure Philippe had to go through before he joined the club,

before we signed off on him, was perhaps the most comprehensive I’ve ever seen.

“We cannot deny that there have been some short-sighted judgments in the past,

but this time we all got the opportunity to engage at the board level.

“From my perspective, it is my way of doing things. I don’t conduct interviews. I interrogate them.

“That can be a rather confrontational encounter.

“It was a very healthy, open, two-way discourse.

He correlated his goals and ambitions with Rangers,

and we discovered that he does his homework meticulously regarding Rangers’ expectations as well as their constraints,

which was a significant tick mark.

“I’ve been with him quite a bit personally since my first encounter with him, even if it was on Zoom due to geography.

“I was there for the first several games and with every day that went by,

I became more and more convinced that we’ve done the right thing.

“It looks to have been there for a long time. From the board’s standpoint,

the fact that he has accomplished so much in such a short amount of time is very commendable.

“We’re playing some catch-up right now, but we’re grateful that the majority of the fans are giving us a chance.

If we do not deliver over time, we shall be held accountable.

“But all I can say for now is that I’m really confident.

But it is football. We are not going in there with any guarantees, on or off the field.

“I’ve been around for a long time and understand that in football,

you’re only as good as your next result. So I will never be presumptuous.”
