Steelers’ Art Rooney II voices impatience: ‘We’ve had enough of this’

After failing to win a playoff game for the seventh consecutive year, the Steelers will need to undergo some soul searching this offseason. On Monday, owner Art Rooney II expressed his unhappiness with his team, which appears to be stuck in mediocrity.

“We have had enough of this. “It’s time for some wins,” Rooney II told reporters. “It’s time to take the following steps. There is definitely some urgency there.”

This year, head coach Mike Tomlin extended his record of non-losing seasons to 17. That is no longer satisfactory for fans or the organization. Pittsburgh has long taken pride in competing for Super Bowls, but that hasn’t been the case in recent years.

Rooney II believes the Steelers aren’t as far away as many imagine, thanks to a good 2023 NFL Draft class.

“I think it’s fair to say that I do feel that we’re closer [to contending] at this stage of the game than we were at this point last year,” Rooney said. “I think we have a core group of players and we can compete with this group.”

The biggest question remains: who will be Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback in 2024. Kenny Pickett, the team’s first-round pick in 2022, has thrown just 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 25 games over the last two seasons. But Rooney II still seems to believe in him.

“We still feel comfortable with Kenny,” Rooney II said. “But we can’t discount what Mason [Rudolph] did and can’t discount the fact that having competition at quarterback will be good for everybody.”

Rudolph threw for 945 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception during the last month of the season. However, he is scheduled to become a free agency this offseason. Regardless, both guys have a lot to prove next year.

Whoever the QB1 is, the Steelers will need another miraculous summer from general manager Omar Khan if they want to avoid missing the playoffs or going one-and-done in the postseason for the eighth consecutive year in 2024.
