Rangers-linked striker turns down chance to return to return to Scottish Premiership in late transfer blow

Rangers are keen to sign a striker in the coming days as they respond to the long-term injury of Abdallah Sima

Rangers have suffered a late transfer setback in their pursuit of ex-Motherwell attacker Kevin van Veen.

Linked to Rangers, the striker declines the opportunity to rejoin the Scottish Premiership in a late transfer blow

The Ibrox club is looking to acquire a striker in the last weeks of the transfer season to fill the vacuum left by Abdallah Sima,

who recently suffered a catastrophic injury in training while playing for Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Sima has 10 Premiership goals in 20 Rangers games and has been a driving force behind the club’s recent success under Philippe Clement. While an exact timetable for his injury has yet to be verified,

manager Clement anticipates that he will be sidelined for a ‘long period’, which could jeopardize his team’s title ambitions.

Many fans considered van Veen as a perfect replacement for Sima because of his Scottish football background.

The 32-year-old scored 25 goals in 38 appearances for Motherwell last season, making him one of the division’s leading scorers.

This performance earned him a move to second-tier Dutch club FC Groningen. However, he has struggled to make an impact at his new club, scoring just five goals in 14 appearances.

The striker has not started a game since October,

and he has only made four substitute appearances in the last five months.Van Veen’s recent banishment, combined with Rangers’ need for a striker, sparked talk of a return to the Premiership.

According to Football Scotland, Eredivisie side Vitesse is likely to chase Van Veen after selling Said Humulic, who is expected to join Lokomotiv Moscow in January.

Groningen has already stated that they are willing to sell van Veen,

but only on a permanent basis. Several Scottish clubs, notably Rangers,

are rumored to be interested in the striker, but only on a short-term loan.

Speaking about the out-of-favour forward’s future, Groningen’s sporting director stated:

“If there is interest because Kevin is not playing, we will listen.” If another club offers a specific offer and the answer is satisfactory, we will help with his departure.”
