Neil McCann informed Charlie Mulgrew he was ‘appalled’ by his reaction to

Corrie Ndaba’s red card for Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Grant Irvine gave the left-back his marching orders after a VAR check prompted the referee to upgrade

the yellow card that had been flashed in front of the on-loan Ipswich player.

The 24-year-old undoubtedly won the ball in his robust challenge on Hibernian’s Jair Tavares,

but VAR and Irvine both felt his follow-through deserved a red card.

Killie manager Derek McInnes made his emotions on the topic known after the game,

stating that the judgment altered the direction of the game, allowing Hibs to draw 2-2 at Rugby Park.

On BBC Sportscene, the former Rangers and Celtic pundits clashed over the contentious decision.

The tape opens with host Steven Thomson asking the former Dundee United defender for his thoughts on the call.

He says, “I believe it is a sending off based on the game regulations. He’s reckless, lunges, and touches the ball.

“So, by being objective, you’d say, ‘He touched the ball, it’s not a foul,’ but under today’s regulations,

he’s lunged, he’s touched the ball,

but he’s come over and could’ve gravely injured the Hibs player.

With today’s rules, it’s a clear send-off for me.”

McCann then disputed his viewpoint. He answered, “I completely disagree. I don’t think it’s a yellow card, so there you go.

“I believe he is in control. He slides and stretches, but he actually wins the ball with the outside of his left boot.

If Tavares does not make touch with the ball,

it slides sideways and nothing happens.”

Mulgrew provided more context for his opinion. He continued, “I believe he is out of control.

If you look back, he’s off the ground.

“Listen, the laws of the game say it’s a send-off. I don’t think he should be sent off; instead,

I believe the rules should be changed because he touched the ball.

“With his two feet off the ground, he is unable to contact the ball. If he contacts the ball,

he should immediately shift his foot out of the path. I believe he is lunging, which is why he can’t.

McCann was having none of it, telling the ex-centre-back,

“Well, as a member of the defenders’ union, I’m appalled by your opinion here, but I take your thoughts on it.”

Mulgrew: “We’re risking turning it into a non-contact sport.”

I’m not advocating that we should have greater contact,

which would not have resulted in a sending off in the past,

but under today’s regulations, being irresponsible,

leaving the ground, or endangering an opponent is grounds for a sending off.

In the regulations of the game, it’s a red card.”
