‘Drastic’ Rangers deal collapse dismissed as ace set to fly into Glasgow – report
Rangers are hoping to “rubber-stamp” a deal for Oscar Cortes this week,
as the Colombian prepares to fly into Glasgow, according to Football Scotland.
The outlet stated on their website on January 29 that the winger will join the Light Blues before the January transfer window closes, with only a “drastic misstep” in discussions considered as capable of derailing the move currently, which is “not expected to happen”.
After only half a season with Lens in France,
the 20-year-old will join Rangers on loan with the option to buy, depending on his performance for the club.
Cortes will join Fabio Silva and Mohamed Diomande as Rangers recruits in January,
with age-mate Jefte also expected, and further inbound and outgoing activity scheduled after that.
In the bag?
There appears to be a lot of confidence that this deal will be completed before the February 1 deadline,
but little can be taken for granted in the last days of the January window.
So the Gers will certainly need to avoid making one of the “drastic missteps” that would cause the Cortes deal to fail.
Despite only signing him from Millonarios in his own country this summer,
Lens haven’t had much use for him and are supposedly willing to let him go,
with only four Ligue 1 outings to his name.
However, with Rangers deemed to be lacking width following Michael Beale’s summer overhaul,
having seen Ryan Kent leave as his contract expired and then sold Fashion Sakala,
and regular wide starter Abdallah Sima ruled out for the majority of the season this month,
there appears to be an opportunity at Ibrox in the second half of the season.
If Nils Koppen and Philippe Clement are lobbying to bring Cortes in at this level,
they must believe they can get more out of him than his current team can.
The Belgian manager has already captured the Viaplay Cup and mounted a great
turnaround following what was a fairly turgid start to the season.
Despite defeat in his first Old Firm derby on December 30,
Rangers are just five points behind Celtic with a game in hand, so the title battle appears to be back on,
and the correct signings at this time might make the difference.
