Brock Purdy shows it’s time to retire savage Mr. Irrelevant moniker

It’s time to retire, savage, as Brock Purdy demonstrates. The term “Mr. Irrelevant” first surfaced on NBC Sports Chicago.

The final pick in the NFL Draft hasn’t been so fondly referred to as Mr. Irrelevant for a long time. It’s a slight to the final player selected, who usually goes well beyond the No. 250 overall pick.

For the most part, the nickname is accurate—if a little harsh—because players chosen late in the draft often struggle to make an NFL roster, let alone have an impact on the field. However, Brock Purdy, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, might have changed our perception of the final draft choice on his own.

The 49ers selected Purdy with the 262nd and final pick in the 2022 draft, making him Mr. Irrelevant from that year. There’s a good chance we wouldn’t be familiar with his name today if it weren’t for some unfortunate injury luck in San Francisco. Nevertheless, during the 2022 season, starting quarterback Trey Lance and starting backup Jimmy Garoppolo both sustained injuries that ended their seasons, forcing Purdy to fill in as a rookie.

Purdy has only won since taking over as the 49ers quarterback

Naturally, Purdy has only won since taking over as the 49ers quarterback. As a starter, he has an amazing 17-4 record, and he has now guided San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance.

Although Purdy was hurt in the first quarter of the NFC Championship game against the Eagles, there’s a chance he could have done the same last year as well.

Some people thought undrafted free agent quarterback Tyson Bagent should have been given an opportunity to join the Bears roster last summer because of Purdy’s success, and Bagent once again demonstrated why unheralded quarterbacks shouldn’t be written off. While Justin Fields treated for a throwing hand injury, he performed well enough to help the Bears win 2-2. Purdy’s success also suggests that the Mr. Irrelevant monicker should probably be retired.
