Pittsburgh Steelers interviewing recently fired NFL head coach for offensive coordinator vacancy

While the Baltimore Ravens prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs,

their AFC North rivals are making plans to improve for next season.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Pittsburgh Steelers will conduct an interview with Arthur Smith on Sunday for their offensive coordinator position.

Smith, who was recently fired by the Atlanta Falcons after leading a 21-30 record over three seasons,

is regarded as a talented offensive thinker.

It’s the reason he earned the position in the first place,

after helping the Tennessee Titans rank second and fourth in yards and points scored respectively during the 2020 season.

One of the most significant difficulties in Atlanta was that Smith was given nothing to work with at quarterback after replacing a 36-year-old Matt Ryan.

The Falcons then virtually drove him out of town after attempting to get Deshaun Watson but failing.

This created an unpleasant situation in which everyone knew Atlanta wanted to move on from Ryan,

but he was still under contract. It simply wouldn’t work.

The Falcons then focused on Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder,

and Taylor Heinicke for the next two seasons.

Needless to say, it didn’t provide better outcomes, and Smith is now paying the consequences.

While the Steelers may have similar challenges, as they continue to look for a franchise quarterback,

Smith has demonstrated his ability to run a productive offense.

A significant part of this is due to his fondness for pounding the rock,

as the Falcons had the most rushing attempts in 2022.

The Falcons continued to run the ball a lot in 2023, ranking third in attempts,

but their YPC dropped to 17th from fourth the previous year.

Can Smith revitalize the Steelers’ offense in 2024? At the very least, expect their rushing attack to improve significantly.

But first and foremost, all parties must agree on the interview procedure.

However, if the Steelers can emerge as Smith as their offensive coordinator,

that should be considered a big win in Pittsburgh.
