Philippe Clement praises 26-year-old tipped for £500k exit despite blowing latest chance

In the match against St Mirren, Philippe Clement hooked the Rangers winger at halftime, but he still acknowledged Scott Wright’s contribution.

The 26-year-old attacker received his first starting spot in the starting lineup since the 5-0 victory over Dundee in November, and it was also his second start under the Belgian manager in Paisley.

It was an uncommon chance for the former Aberdeen player to make an impression, as the Rangers manager has previously stated that he will use his squad throughout the season.

At halftime, Scott Wright was hooked alongside Todd Cantwell for Tom Lawrence and Ross McCausland, respectively. Ibrox supporters may have thought he didn’t accept this, but it’s understandable.

Scott Wright substitute Philippe Clement

Speaking following the eventual 1-0 victory, Rangers manager Clement asserted that the substitutions were made with the intention of winning in difficult circumstances on a challenging Paisley pitch.

After the game, Scott Wright and Todd Cantwell were also praised for their contributions, even though it seemed like the decisions were entirely tactical rather than personal.

Clement responded, “No, it’s different things,” when asked if the changes had anything to do with either player’s level of fitness.

“It’s a little tactical, and it’s also to introduce novelty. It’s a little bit of both, but the goal is to win the games together rather than worrying about who starts or finishes first.

Additionally, the two players who left the game at that point played a significant role in the first half.

Thus, it’s a group effort. We are creating a team, and you are starting to see it more and more; whoever is playing, they are all contributing to the team; they are all fighting and celebrating together.

“Until the end of the season, that is what I want to see.”

The Rangers winger never really seizes the opportunity.

Rangers supporters are undoubtedly paying attention to the situation involving Scott Wright, even though Philippe Clement has

demonstrated that he is not afraid to make adjustments.

Wright joined the Gers three years ago in January 2021, during the time of Steven Gerrard’s leadership, but fans haven’t seen enough

of him in spite of several opportunities. Wright has scored in the League and Scottish Cups this season, as well as in the Scottish Cup

Final victory over Hearts in 2022, but he has generally kept his best Rangers performances for the cup competitions.

With 102 appearances for Rangers, including 18 this season and in the 2022 Europa League Final, the winger’s ten goals and seven

assists have fallen short of the expectations of eager supporters. Scott Wright’s role at Rangers remains a mystery as he was on the

verge of leaving the team this summer, but his £500k move to Turkish side Pendikspor fell through at the last minute.

Wright was given a chance against St Mirren, but as Philippe Clement’s career progresses, one wonders if the frustrating winger is

starting to run out of opportunities.
