Brakes pulled on Rangers links to £3.8m Ligue 1 attacker
Despite the fact that Ibrox’s interest has been described as “genuine,” reports have severed Rangers’ ties to RC Lens winger Oscar Cortes.
In the player’s native Colombia, rumors circulated that Rangers was very nearly finalizing a loan-to-buy agreement for the Ligue 1
winger, 20, in January. Excitement among fans is understandable given that Rangers would be signing a highly-rated young winger
who recently joined Lens from Millonarios in the summer for €4.5 million (£3.8 million). However, a few reporters in Scotland have
refuted reports that a deal is as close as first reported, once again in response to news breaking elsewhere.
Not as close to the Rangers as reported is Oscar Cortes
First off, the team hopes to finalize a deal with Oscar Cortes in the next 24 to 48 hours, according to prominent Rangers fan site Heart & Hand, which has stated that interest in the player is “real.”
The outlet, which is well-known for having strong ties to the team, will only be repeating information obtained from sources at Ibrox.
Journalist Andy Newport of the Daily Record is another with ties to the Rangers, and he has stated that information indicating the
deal is completed “aren’t quite right.”
Journalist Chris Jack of the Herald & Times concurs, saying that reports that Oscar Cortes is en route to Glasgow are “wide of the
mark.” During the transfer window, Rangers have confirmed or refuted rumors about the team by using journalists and fan media.
Previously employed primarily to refute stories that were gaining enormous media attention (Michy Batshuayi and David Jurasek
being the most prominent examples), we can now be certain that the connections to Cortes are valid.
But, it seems that much work needs to be done on a deal as Rangers attempt to bolster their roster in January.
Ibrox transfers more money
As Rangers look to bolster their attack going into the second half of the season, Oscar Cortes is being strongly linked to the team.
Wolves forward Fabio Silva has already joined Rangers, and Ivorian midfielder Mohamed Diomande has also joined from Danish team FC Nordsjaelland.
Manager Philippe Clement has acknowledged that his team will be “busy” in the transfer window and that all eyes will be on Ibrox as
January draws to an end. Oscar Cortes does seem to be a strong Rangers target, but we’ll have to wait and see if a deal can be
completed for the winger on time. The club has also been strongly linked with a move for Brazilian left-back Jefte, with Scotland
international striker Lawrence Shankland reportedly watched over the weekend.
