‘Bite The Bullet’ – Kris Boyd slams Rangers board, wants them to act more like Celtic
Kris Boyd has lambasted the Rangers board for how they have handled player contracts and the transfer window, advising them to act more like Celtic.
The great striker was on Sky Sports as a commentator before the 1-0 win against St Mirren (27 January, 12:11) and was questioned about Philippe Clement’s recent statements about player contract problems at Ibrox.
And Boyd was dissatisfied with the club’s previous handling of circumstances, telling the board to “protect itself” and begin selling players at their peak, as Celtic do, to guarantee they get money in and don’t leave empty-handed.
“I think when you want to look back at the recruitment side, we’ve all been very vocal about it, especially when you look across the city and Celtic always seem to get it right on when to sell a player and get the money back in,” he went on to say.
“The two that come to mind immediately away would be Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, when their price was very high, the club didn’t capitalize, and both of them walked out of the door for nothing.
“Philippe Clement mentioned earlier this week that there are additional four or five players available this summer, which cannot be the case. The club has to protect itself.
“By doing so, if players are performing exceptionally, you must occasionally let them go. You may not have a larger fan base or more enthusiastic supporters, but there are larger leagues that can offer players far more money. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and let them go.
“Like Celtic has done, and Rangers need to get to a stage where they’re bringing players in, providing them a platform to thrive domestically and in Europe, but when the price is right,
sell them and get the club money in. The players that you thought were going to come in and they were going to be able to flip for money, it’s not really happened.”
Bingo
Nobody will like the comments implying that the club should be more like Celtic, yet it is difficult to deny that they do things well while Rangers do not.
As previously said, the obvious examples are Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, who could easily have been sold for eight figures apiece in recent years. However, the scenario is repeating again, with several players out of contract this summer.
John Lundstram is someone the manager has publicly stated he wants to keep at the club, but Abdallah Sima’s loan will end, and Leon Balogun, Ryan Jack, Kemar Roofe, and Borna Barisic could all depart for free.
The club must decide whether to keep or sell these players considerably sooner in order to cash in or maintain their high value.
Rangers’ board must act better and more forcefully to assure the club’s continued success and improvement in the future years.
