Talking about £7m’: Pundit suggests Rangers have ‘no chance’ of signing target now

Rangers are interested in Bristol City’s FA Cup hero Tommy Conway, but one former Scotland international believes the Scottish Premiership giants will have to pay around £7 million.

Tommy Conway needed only three minutes to put Bristol City ahead against West Ham United in the FA Cup third round, presenting his elegant finishing and dead-eyed poise to a far larger audience in the process.

The Scotland under-21 striker has quietly and expertly carried out his duties for The Robins over the last 18 months. However, after sending West Ham packing earlier this month, Conway’s name is starting to surface more frequently in the gossip columns.

According to Football Insider’s Peter O’Rourke, interest is coming from both Rangers and the English Premier League. Conway has fans at Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and Brentford.

Rangers covet Bristol City striker Tommy Conway.

“He is a talented boy,” says Peter Grant, who spent 15 years with Rangers’ Old Firm rivals Celtic.

“Going for the likes of Conway would cost you an arm and a leg financially.”

Given that Bristol City has paid exorbitant fees for the likes of Alex Scott, Antoine Semenyo, and Adam Webster, all of whom are now Premier League players, Grant expects Conway to want a fee that will test Rangers’ financial resources.

“You’re talking about £6 or £7 million, and you’ve played two good games. You have appeared on television (the West Ham match was shown on the BBC). “That’s what it becomes,” Grant contends.

“He is a gifted boy. There are a few youngsters in England who are extremely good players, but (Scottish clubs) have little hope of competing with them.”

Scotland’s response to Jamie Vardy?

Conway has scored 20 goals for Bristol City since the beginning of last season. Comparisons have been drawn to Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy, and there was certainly something Vardy-esque about the way he sprinted onto a Konstantinos Mavropanos blunder and scored against The Hammers.

Rangers have already signed two players this season.  Fabio Silva joined on loan from Wolves while Mohamed Diomande’s arrival was confirmed on Friday.

According to reports, Philippe Clement’s side are now closing in on a new left-back. And it won’t be Cameron Pring – Conway’s Bristol City team-mate – but Jefte of Fluminense.
