Nicolas Raskin could be Rangers club captain as Barry Ferguson shares James Tavernier prediction

Barry Ferguson has claimed that Nicolas Raskin has the attributes to become Rangers club captain in the future but worries that he could depart Ibrox if he keeps up his “very good performances”.

Speaking live on The Go Radio Football Show (15 August), the former Rangers midfielder stated that Raskin has been one of the club’s best performances,

highlighting his developing ability and aggression as crucial characteristics. While many have questioned current captain James Tavernier’s effectiveness in the post, Ferguson believes he is unlikely to lose the armband anytime soon.

Ferguson, as reported by Football Scotland, stated on Go Radio: “Sometimes when you’ve got that armband,

the fans have a go at you. I’ve got to be honest, Tavernier does well for me.

When he’s having difficult games or difficult moments within games, he generally comes up with the answer,

and he did that last night. Raskin is one of my favourites since they brought him in in January.

It took him a few weeks to get up to speed, which is

“In time, I believe he could be [a Rangers captain].

” My only concern is that if Raskin continues to produce high-quality performances, Rangers may struggle to maintain him.

“[But] I do not believe it will happen.

I don’t see it happening. If it was ever going to happen, it would be during the off-season.”

One for the future?

Raskin has been with Rangers since January and has established himself as one of the club’s finest performers.

He demonstrated this again on Tuesday night (15 August) in the Gers’ crucial match against Servette,

when the Belgian was aggressive and effective as they advanced to the Champions League’s next qualification round.

Tavernier has received a lot of criticism after a bad season last year,

but Ferguson says that his position as captain is secure, despite his liking for Raskin.

Rangers will need a strong captain this season as they aim to compete on all fronts,

and he has been the leader since the summer of 2018,

so it seems superfluous to change him anytime soon, regardless of his play.

The skipper proved his worth in the Servette match,

scoring the equalising goal that clinched Rangers’ fourth-round tie against PSV.

While Raskin may not become captain anytime soon,

having a squad full of players with the potential to be successful leaders is a plus, but it may be critical for Rangers this season.

They will need a strong mentality to overcome their rough start to the season.
