A jury returns a guilty verdict for the guy who killed former Saints defensive end Will Smith in 2016 by manslaughter.

After deliberating for over four hours, a jury in New Orleans found former Saints defensive end Will Smith guilty of

the deadly shooting early on Saturday morning.

In April 2016, Cardell Hayes was found guilty of manslaughter a second time after Smith was shot during an

altercation over a car accident. Smith was operating an SUV when the collision occurred. Over whether Smith’s car

had struck Hayes’s Hummer on Magazine Street in New Orleans, a verbal confrontation broke out.

After the verdict in the nearly eight-year-old case’s retrial, Hayes may now face up to forty years in prison. In

December 2016, a jury found Hayes guilty of both attempted manslaughter and manslaughter in relation to Smith’s

death, having injured Smith’s widow, Racquel Smith. In the most recent trial, Hayes, 36, chose not to testify under

oath.

Despite the fact that Louisiana law at the time only required 10 jurors to agree, the jury vote was 10-2, but

nonunanimous findings were prohibited by the U.S. Supreme Court. After serving more than four years of a 25-year

sentence, Hayes was freed on bond
