The Dallas Cowboys are in a state of flux after another disappointing playoff exit. Mike McCarthy’s contract was up in the air after

their shocking loss to the Green Bay Packers, and many thought he’d be shown the door.

To everyone’s surprise, team owner Jerry Jones kept him on for one more year. However,

there seems to be a huge caveat attached to his extended tenure.

It’s make or break for McCarthy’s Cowboys

Jones declined to extend McCarthy’s contract, according to Andrew Gamble of the Mirror, and will instead try to let him complete it in Arlington.

For some frustrated Cowboys fans, it would seem weird that America’s Team provided a last-minute lifeline to a coach who had

allowed early playoff exits. Despite his lackluster postseason record in Dallas, he manages to survive as the team’s head coach.

McCarthy is the Dallas head coach with the greatest victory percentage in franchise history, at 62.7%. Furthermore, the Cowboys have

a 12-5 record over the last three seasons, which is a mark they last held under Jim Johnson and Barry Switzer in the 1990s.

McCarthy also seemed committed to ending his unlucky postseason run. Prior to the 2024 season, he made a significant promise:

“We’re capable of winning. We are adept at training for victory. The proper folks are here. However, we haven’t yet reached the point

of winning postseason games. It is really depressing to be sitting here and discussing. I know how to win, though. We are going to

cross that line. I am standing here today because I am completely confident in it.

McCarthy continued, saying, “My goal is to win a championship.” Other than that, I didn’t come here to get another contract. In order

to win a global title, I traveled to Dallas.

Positions McCarthy must address in the offseason

Part of McCarthy’s to-do list in his final year in Arlington is addressing weak points in their offense. Inside the Star pointed to three

sore spots in the Dallas roster that he must address this offseason.
