Tim Iroegbunam to take over for Aston Villa following Leander Dendoncker’s departure
Dendoncker is set to go on loan to Napoli, but it’s unclear if Villa will find a
replacement before the transfer deadline next week. In the meanwhile,
Iroegbunam is expected to get more playing time during what could be a busy
second half of the season.
Despite just having played three minutes as a substitute thus far, Emery has been
impressed with the 20-year-old in training.
“I tested him during every meeting we had. The manager said, “I was testing him with our coaches.” “I believe he is a player who can improve, and we believe he could improve now
more by getting opportunities to play.”
Iroegbunam, a graduate of Albion’s academy, joined Villa in 2021 and, under Steven
Gerrard, made his first-team debut the following season. He ended the previous
season on loan at QPR.
Emery went on, “His attributes as a player are essentially the same, trying to fight for
or share the position with Boubacar Kamara.”
“Leander Dendoncker and I are quite alike. After conducting a thorough analysis of
our options for the next four months in every competition we have entered, I made
the decision to let Dendoncker go and retain Tim.
“I’m going to provide him opportunities to advance alongside us in the concept we’re
working to develop.”
In order to offer cover and competition, Emery also announced that another rookie,
right-back Kaine Kesler-Hayden, 21, will remain on the team for the remainder of the campaign.
He clarified, “We needed a player with his qualities as a full-back, so we added Kaine to our squad.” “Matty Cash is the only player who has that level of skill.” We have two now that Kaine is here.
