Even though the New Orleans Saints finished 2023 with a winning record, it wasn’t enough to help them win the

NFC South and make their first postseason appearance since 2021. Despite having one of the easier schedules in the

league, the team was a huge letdown.

When it came to being disappointments, a few team members stood out more than the others over the journey.

Whether these two players’ 2023 failure was the result of bad performance, injury, or perhaps both, Saints

supporters might not care if they are not on the team in 2024.

Turner Payton

The Saints chose Houston native Payton Turner with their first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, deviating from the

plan of selecting well-known players. Saints supporters were surprised by Turner’s selection because he was not a

player who the pundits had been talking about as a first-round selection.

It turns out that Turner wasn’t included among the candidates for first-round picks for a reason. Turner has played

in just 15 games in his three seasons as a professional, including just two this past season.

Turner is fine when he’s on the field, but his injuries have been a major issue. He will most likely be on the club next

season because the Saints don’t gain anything by removing him, but unless he goes off in the

Considering the Saints could have had Elijah Moore to boost their WR corps, Landon Dickerson to give their o-line a

boost, or Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah as depth to the linebacker position, drafting Turner here feels like an even

bigger blunder. As I mentioned before, he’ll be on the team next season but if he weren’t, would Saints fans care?

Since no NFC South teams are still in action, Saints supporters can move on.

There are no longer any NFC South teams competing in the playoffs, so New Orleans Saints supporters can unwind.

Look, Saints supporters need to accept victories when they come.

Alright New Orleans Saints fans, you can officially chill for the rest of the NFL playoffs. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers

are heading home, which means you no longer have to hate-watch the playoffs hoping that they don’t go any further.

Saints fans have been through enough during the 2023 season, why pile on as the calendar turns to 2024?

The NFC South is obviously not going to be as much of a creampuff division, at least not for the clubs involved,

regardless of how the Buccaneers season plays out. The Atlanta Falcons are getting a new coaching staff and maybe a

new quarterback, while the Carolina Panthers are just the Panthers. Baker Mayfield and the Bus demonstrated they

can win a postseason game.

The point is that the Saints still have work to do, particularly at the top spot. Although Mayfield played brilliantly in

the last moments, Derek Carr is still a solid quarterback. This division will be won by the quarterback with the best

play, which is not exactly a new idea.

But we have plenty of time to think about all that. For now, supporters of the New Orleans Saints may kick back,

unwind, and enjoy the conference title game I and the Super Bowl that will come next—possibly with a chilled

beverage of their choice. Beyond that, however, is where things really become tough. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’

playoff defeat indicates that while they are a target, they are also a goal that can be achieved, particularly if the game

is held in the Superdome.
