BBC Scotland journalist Tom English believes Celtic will pip Rangers to the title, even if he’s been effusive in his praise of Philippe Clement.

Rangers have cut their Old Firm rival’s lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to five points, with Clement’s men also boasting a game in

hand on their rivals.

This comes after an impressively routine 3-0 win over Hibs at Easter Road with the Rangers squad improving by the game under the

Belgian manager. But according to English, he doesn’t believe it will be enough for Rangers to beat Celtic to the Premiership title when all is

said and done in May.

Speaking during the Easter Road game on BBC Sportsound, Tom English lauded Philippe Clement’s early achievements as Rangers

manager.

Though he isn’t projecting an easy Premiership win, the outspoken writer has picked Celtic to “pull away” in the title contest.

English predicted that Celtic will distance itself. “They won’t win the league by a wide margin, but I do believe they will win it, and Clement

has performed admirably thus far.

“Much better than I anticipated, and he hasn’t really added his own flair yet. I’m eager to watch what kinds of players he targets when he

does.”

“I know he’s already lent one out, but what else does he look for? And what is there to gain from them? I think he’s done a great job; he’s

clearly won a trophy thus far, too, so well done.

But still a long way off. The Rangers’ goal is to win the league. Though I don’t think they’ll win the league, I didn’t anticipate them to be this

close to Celtic.

Philippe Clement’s sights set on the goal

Tom English’s remarks won’t even slightly concern Rangers boss Philippe Clement as he pursues Celtic this season.

Under the Belgian, the Gers appear like a different team, but the league crown is still up for grabs.

Rangers continue to look at transfer reinforcements in January and we’ll know within a week if the club’s squad is well placed to mount that

title tilt in the second half of the campaign.

All of those title soundbites, however, originate from the Celtic side; Calum McGregor and Brendan Rodgers’ remarks following December’s

Old Firm game should be carefully noted.

The confidence, bordering on arrogance, that has driven Celtic’s title challenge this season is personified by Tom English; Rangers simply

need to keep winning games.

We will undoubtedly be there or thereabouts if we achieve that, putting a lot of pressure on the Parkhead club as they prepare for a

challenging schedule.
