Rangers crush the Hibs of Montgomery to get closer to Celtic
Rangers crushed Nick Montgomery’s drastically altered Hibernian lineup, closing the gap on league leaders and
bitter rivals Celtic with a 3-0 triumph at Easter Road.
For the match on Wednesday, Australian coach Montgomery made five changes: Myziane Maolida, Kanayo Megwa,
Dylan Vente, Dylan Levitt, and Jordan Obita, who all signed on loan.
Half an hour had passed before Light Blues defender Ridvan Yilmaz scored the first goal, and seconds before
halftime, midfielder Todd Cantwell scored an incredible goal.
The striker Cyriel Dessers added a third goal in the 74th minute shortly after coming off the bench, bringing his
season total to eleven. The goals were of a caliber inconsistent with the mistake-plagued opening forty-five minutes.
Even though Hibs missed a few opportunities, with one game remaining, Philippe Clement’s team fell five points
behind their Old Firm rivals.
Maolida, who signed on loan from Hertha Berlin last week, made his debut for the host Hibs, who were aiming for
their first league victory in four games. Fellow newcomers Luke Amos and Emiliano Marcondes were benched.
Wednesday’s other league game ended in a 1-1 draw between Aberdeen and St Johnstone.
Bojan Miovski’s penalty kick put Aberdeen ahead in the 62nd minute, and David Keltjens’ header gave the home
team an equalizer sixteen minutes later.
