There are now two fewer possible candidates for the open offensive and defensive coordinator positions with the New England Patriots.

Expectedly, an NFL Network story on Wednesday night stated that Dan Pitcher,

the Bengals’ current quarterbacks coach, will be joining them as offensive coordinator.

Furthermore, according to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, the Las Vegas Raiders

have hired Gerald Alexander, a former assistant backs coach for the Pittsburgh

Steelers, to be their safeties coach. For the two Pats openings under new head

coach Jerod Mayo, Pitcher and Alexander had both conducted interviews.

Pitcher has been a Bengals assistant since 2016, and in the last few months,

he has become a highly sought-after coaching candidate.

Following the Bengals’ 2020 first-round selection of Joe Burrow, the 37-year-old

began working primarily with Cincinnati’s wide receivers before being officially

designated quarterbacks coach. Pitcher received a large contract deal to stay with

the team over the previous offseason due to his excellent work with Burrow.

Jake Browning, the Bengals’ backup quarterback who started seven games following

Burrow’s season-ending injury, was also greatly aided by Pitcher.

Under head coach Mike Tomlin, Alexander recently finished his second season as

the Pittsburgh Steelers’ assistant defensive backs coach. With 20 interceptions in 2022,

the Steelers secondary, under his coaching, tied for first place in the League.

The 39-year-old worked under former Pats coach Brian Flores as a defensive backs

coach for the Miami Dolphins from 2020 to 21 before moving to Steel City.

In order to replace outgoing coordinator Bill O’Brien, who was just appointed to the
same role at Ohio State University, New England is aggressively seeking a replacement.

For the vacancy, they have already conducted interviews with Zac Robinson and Nick

Caley of the Los Angeles Rams.

Since winning the Super Bowl in 2018, New England has not yet experienced a postseason triumph. The Patriots’ next two postseason games were losses, both to the Tennessee Titans in

the wild card round (20-13 in 2019) and to the Buffalo Bills in the round of 47-17 in 2021.
However, the Pats’ run of postseason domination won’t end in the next few days or weeks.

Under the leadership of head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady,

New England earned all but seven of its postseason victories from 2001 to 2019.

This two-decade run of success is unlikely to be matched, either in the near or far future.
