Derek Ferguson encouraged the scouting team to keep looking for “wee diamonds” on the market, saying he would “absolutely love it”

if Joe Gelhardt became the man to score goals for Rangers on a regular basis.

Rangers are interested in 21-year-old Leeds forward Gelhardt, who is now out of favor, according

to a report by Simon Jones in the Daily Mail on January 8.

Given that Leeds is unable to approve any additional international credit agreements, this step appears to be complex (Yorkshire Evening Post, 19 January).

Although the former Rangers player admits he doesn’t know much about Gelhardt as a player, if he were the one to start scoring goals,

Ferguson would have no problem with him heading to Ibrox.

“I don’t know too much about him; most weekends I’m out covering Scottish football, so my concentration’s in that,”

he stated in an interview with Ibrox News.

“That’s why we’ve all these guys, there’s scouts that are there up and down the country,

watching different leagues, different

players, so if his name is cropping up we need a goalscorer.

“You talk about leading the line, I think we just need someone who can put the ball in the back of the net.

“Under Clement, he’s shown he’s very organised, from back to middle but it’s the business end,

the business end is the final third and

we need somebody who can put the ball in the back of the net and if that boy can do that then bring him to the club I would love it.

“Sometimes guys like that just need that opportunity in amongst better players if you want to call it that.

I don’t know much about

him, that’s why these guys are paid money to go up and down the country to find these wee diamonds.”
